About Agency Dance Project

Agency Dance Project is an improvisational dance project in Boulder, CO.

J. Akiyama's contact improvisation teachers include Boulder-based teachers Alicia Grayson, Gretchen Spiro, and Steve Homsher as well as Nancy Stark Smith, Chris Aiken, Angie Hauser, Ray Chung, Jörg Hassmann, Scott Wells, Mirva Mäkinen, and Kirstie Simson. He is the main organizer of Sharing Weight.

He has participated at the West Coast CI Jam (Berkeley, CA); European CI Teachers Exchange (Ibiza, Spain); the Freiburg CI Festival (Freiburg, Germany) Skiing on Skin CI Festival (Raasepori, Finland);  iDance Japan CI Festival (Kagoshima, Japan); Asia Improvisation Art Exchange (Seoul, South Korea); CI Ground Research (Earthdance, MA; California); the Moab Jam & Workshop (Moab, UT); and Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation (Seattle, WA).  

He has also performed in San Francisco (Glimpse) and Berkeley (West Coast CI Jam), CA; New York, NY (Glimpse 2); Boulder, CO; Kagoshima, Japan (iDance Japan); Seoul/Udo, South Korea (AIAE); Moab, UT (Moab Jam); Seattle, WA (SFDI); Willard, WI (GLACIER); Mazomanie, WI (Mazopalooza); and Seattle, WA (Glimpse 3)

He is a member of the Tumblebones contact improvisation collective in Boulder, CO. 

He has been actively studying and teaching the Japanese martial art of aikido for over 20 years. His other interests include improvisational photography, the Feldenkrais Method of somatic education,  Playback improvisational theatre, and somatic counseling psychology.
